Through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program, a $1.3 million grant to help aid in the anti-crime effort in Indianapolis has been awarded by the United Justice Department that will allow states, tribes and local governments to support criminal activities that are based on local needs and their priorities. The grant given may be used for training, personnel, buying equipment and repairs as well as updating information systems for law enforcement programs. Funds can also be sued to prosecute, drug treatment programs, correction programs, technology programs and many other programs that is needed to help aid in crime prevention.
Assistant Attorney General, Regina B.Schofield says the grant "will provide Indianapolis with the resources they need to partner with the Justice Department in combating crime and protecting communities."
Indianapolis is not the only one who will be receiving funding from the Justice Assistance Grant Program. Indiana is said to be receiving over 8.1 million, and over $300 million in other grant funds will be issued to other states and territories over the next year. Issuing these grants are based on the state's population and crime statistics.
Once the state receives a grant, the Justice Assistance Grant Program requires that the state give a portion of the funds to local governments, cities, counties, townships or town. Other organizations, such as faith based or community organization or tribal governments are eligible as well to receive a portion of the grant.
