All it takes is a Social Security number for someone to steal your identity. From those nine little numbers, they can acquire your address, phone number, and even your license number - the perfect ingredients for a fake ID. They can then take this legitimate looking ID to any bank, or even take it to your own, to open an account in your name or access the money in your account. They can open credit cards in your name, buy cars, and go on huge shopping sprees with your name on their face. In the end, they don't have to pay for the damage they have done because you are getting the bills with no proof you didn't make the transactions.

Identity theft happens in some form hundreds of times every single day. Credit histories are ruined and legal action is mistakenly taken against an innocent person because of someone who used their information. It is not out of the question for a victim of identity theft to be arrested for a crime they didn't do. It doesn't just happen in the movies anymore. It is happening every single day to real people.

Sadly, it can take a person years to recover from identity theft. Even when the thief is caught and all is well, the paranoia that comes from being a survivor of identity theft always looms overhead. The good news is that there are steps you can take to prevent years of turmoil from becoming a part of your life and this article is going to touch on five very important steps.

The first of those steps is to monitor your financial statements. Keep track of when you are supposed to be getting your statements through the mail and if they have not arrived a few days after they were due to hit your mailbox, it might be a good idea to contact your financial institution. A lot of information can be taken from your statement if it ends up in the wrong hands.

Takeaways
  • Simply getting the mail right after it arrives can be a deterrant
  • Virus protection software can protect more than just your computer
  • Shred documents you don't need that contain important information
