Have you ever heard of scalp acne? Chances are that you probably have, and wondered if there was really such a thing as acne of the scalp. The thought sounds not only disgusting, but ridiculous to many of us. Well, the truth in the matter is that there is such a thing as scalp acne. Here, we will discuss what causes scalp acne and what can be done about it if you have it.

What are the Causes Scalp Acne?

Before we learn what the causes of scalp acne are, let's take a closer look at what causes regular acne. There are several things that are known to cause it. Eating greasy or oily foods, for example, is known to cause regular acne. Another one of the things that is known to cause regular acne is oil from your hair which may drip onto your back, face and neck. This explains why the back, face and neck are the only places that usually experience high amounts of acne. So, as you have probably already figured out on your own, the main cause of acne is oil. The number one cause of scalp acne is constantly having greasy hair or using hair products which are high in oil. The other factor which is known to contribute to scalp acne is stress.

How Do You Get Rid of Scalp Acne?

If you have scalp acne, chances are that it is - at least in part - because you have oily hair or because you use products which have oils in them. If you use hair products that contain a lot of oil or even a little bit of oil, the best thing that you can do is cease using them. If you have naturally oily hair, it is a good idea to choose a shampoo which is designed for oily hair. Avoiding ones which are oil based and instead opting for one that is water based is probably your best option. Clarifying shampoos and conditions are known to work well. Keep in mind that over-conditioning can also contribute to oily hair, so it is best to avoid using too much conditioner. You may want to even consider a two-in-one shampoo and conditioner.
