The Harl Taylor BAG

A Must-Have Accessory for A-listers Everywhere

Harl Taylor handbags like those owned by celebs and fashion icons Elle Mcpherson, Nan Kempner, and Oprah, (Can anyone say status?) are certain to be the high-demand accessory of the summer. Not just for boho fashion, each elegant hand-woven
design is carefully developed using native Bahamian weaving patterns with colorful palms and sisal straw. Adornments and embellishments like handles and mahogany clasps are formed out of native materials to the Islands, giving every Harl Taylor BAG its novel charm.

Harl Taylor is considered one of the finest treasures of the Bahamas. He grew up in Nassau but then left for the states to study interior design at New York’s distinguished Parsons School of Design. When Taylor realized his heart was in fashion instead, and with his talent for chic accessory who would blame him?, the designer left for Paris, where several internships and a position as lead design assistant for the Couture house of Rochas later, Harl Taylor returned to the Bahamas ready to make his fabulous mark on the Caribbean style scene and later the world.

For many, nothing says “summer” like a Harl Taylor BAG. Though they are intricately constructed of woven straw, they come in a refreshing array of colors and textures. The designs are formed as anything from a simple tote the perfect size for your sunglasses, keys, sunscreen and cell phone to large beach bags to carry all the essentials and every size in between.

The Harl Taylor BAG can be purchased only at particular designer specialty shops like Cricket’s, retailing from around $300 and up, or you can purchase them from his boutique in the Bahamas. But for certain clients, the designer offers the royal treatment, even making “house calls” while you are visiting the Bahamas. If you don’t see what you want, for the right client designer Harl Taylor will specifically design a custom BAG just for you. Perhaps that is why discerning A-listers delight in the Harl Taylor BAG Experience.

As a Bahamian art student, and a 3rd generation straw vendors daughter, straw art has always been alive and well in the entire Bahamas, he did nothing to SAVE a dying art because straw art was never dying. What he did do and should be commended for, is take this art, and polish it, making it his own, bringing something different to an already full table. Trust me he probably has stolen some of his designs from vendors because some of them were plaiting straw and making bags before he was born. My great-grandmother on the Family Islands plait straw and made straw baskets from she was a small child, but it never made it past that because she was never presented with the opportunity. Its not about being envious, but about recognizing where your inspiration comes from, all Bahamians were asking was that Mr. Taylor acknowledge where he got his ideas from, trust me I've been an avid follower of his and they are NOT all his own. However, he was a man with a vision, and I was truly impre

Having known Harl since High School I hear what the'Voice of Reason" is saying and would tend to agree had I not known better. Harl is an artist and is compulsively creative. I remember when he was an intern with Jeffrey Taylor while in High School and worshiped the ground Jeffrey walked on;what was more amazing is the fact that while Harl was in college in Paris, it was Jeffrey who became the student and Harl the teacher. They were such good friends that Harl shared his Paris experience with Jeffrey by allowing him to work at Rochas with him while he was in Paris. The man is obviously talented, gifted and kinder than most. I have watched his progress over the years and applaud his efforts for having saved the straw industry in The Bahamas, and he does it because he eats, sleeps and breathes what he does. His passion to create is probably his biggest secret, and I admire him for remaining true to himself.

To Harl Taylor's Biggest Fan:It's narrow minded and a bit ludacris to assume that with a certain level of success anyone becomes immune from wrong doing. I've been buying Harl Taylor for years--a lot more than twenty and perhaps a bigger fan than you are--and I've read the newspaper articles on Harl's antics for which he's been hauled into court over faulty products and services. Also, because I've been buying Harl Taylor for so long, I remember the late JEFFEREY TAYLOR conflict better than most, issues that very few Harl Taylor fans know about;) The bottom line is this: Harl's bags are beautiful regardless of the source of inspiration and while I don't know that he stole that particular design at a craft fair, there is truth to the "Bahamian Who Knows Batter" claim. Everyone not involved, myself included, should buy his handbags--or not--and just keep out of it. RIP JEFFEREY...
