I have to give John Singleton major respect for giving Puerto Rican actors their time to shine. I was going to see this movie regardless because I think Rick Gonzalez is gorgeous. (It's a weakness, but if an attractive man plays a lead role, chances are it's going to catch my eye.) However, I read in JET magazine that the cast was many shades of Puerto Rican people (Afro-Latino, Black Puerto Rican, Puerto Rican), and I really respected that. African American actors get shunned plenty of times for trying to go against stereotypical roles, and Latino actors absolutely get treated the same, if not worse, so for Singleton to produce and direct a movie with a dominant PR cast was something I really respected. Hopefully this will bring more unity with minority actors to look out for each other on the big screen. In areas like the boroughs of New York and Chicago where we live together, it was only a matter of time before the movies reflected this. Besides "Breakin" and "Breakin 2," I haven't seen that type of representation.

Illegal Tender Review:

Not only did I respect the cast variation, but I also liked how Singleton took this movie against the grain. Instead of having Latinos in a poverty-stricken neighborhood looking mean as hell, he went against the stereotype and made the main characters upper class in an extremely nice neighborhood. Whatever car Wilson (Gonzalez's character) was driving was overwhelmingly tight! Wilson grew up with the spoiled, rich kid lifestyle thanks to his mother fleeing his parents' past. But the witness protection program is a joke, and his mother has involuntarily made herself a subtle gangster. No, a woman protecting her children who just happens to know how to shoot. When Wilson finally finds out that his rich kid life has to stop cold after some visitors arrive, all hell breaks loose, and he's on a mission to save his mother.

Takeaways
  • John Singleton directs new movie with a primarily Latino cast.
  • Rick Gonzalez (of Coach Carter and Roll Bounce) is the lead male role.
  • Wilson (Gonzalez's character) life turns upside down to save his family.
Did You Know?
Instead of the women screaming and hollering behind the big, strong man, these ladies were stepping up like "You want some too?"

Yeah, if I had not just missed the first showtime I would have been out the door as soon as I read this. I was that hot. I mostly like comedies and nothing else playing at the closest theatre grabbed my interest. Then I stopped at 7/11 to get a flavored coffee and impulsively bought Jet because it had a picture of Michelle Obama on it and I wanted to read the article. I debated going to the beach versus park and opted for park. After 3 guys tried to pick me up, I headed on home. One of them actually was parked in a lot and then pulled out and followed me, then drove around the block to pull up alongside of me. The other two were walking, like me. Anyway I probably have not read a Jet mag since my daughter was a bit younger than you are now. Just mentioned that 'cause you have mentioned articles from the mag.

Well, damn, you didn't waste any time going to see it, huh? :-) Did you go see it today? Cool! I didn't yell it aloud, but I muttered under my breath "Would you sheeeeeeeeeeeet up!" LOL. Sadly, I've actually been in that type of situation where someone was shooting at another, and there was no screaming with me. I just took off running TWICE! I actually do want to see it a second time. I went to Border's to hang out today, but I'm pretty sure I'll go again. I really enjoyed this one, and considering action flicks aren't really my thing, I was impressed by that alone.

Tee hee, yeah I actually said it out loud "shut up girl!". But it is easy to say how we would react under similiar circumstances. It seems to me common sense to shut up and not give your location away. Ya know, I was so engrossed in the flick I did not notice healing times of bruises. It was not exactly showing a timeline, like "...and the next day". I considered hanging around and watching it a second time.

Thanks for the Great Review!

I read a review on some site that said that actors were "healing" from bruises too quickly. I didn't get that impression. When you see the movie, you tell me. I thought they tried to be as realistic as possible with the looks of a fight. I don't think you'll care for Wilson's girlfriend though. She was that irritating woman you see in horror movies that just screams a lot and looks like she would put the back of her wrist on her forehead and go "How ever will I live?"

Jimmy Smit reminds me of Schwarzenneger. I think it's because of the jawline, but yeah, he's cool. I've just enjoyed how Rick Gonzalez will take on various roles. He was a goofy, nerdish guy in "Roll Bounce," very serious and intense in "Coach Carter," and now he's in this film. As for the women, you know, De Jesus is a really pretty woman as in like Halle Berry pretty. Even when she looked rough, she somehow still looked pretty, so I don't know if you'll embrace the film or not. Without giving away the plot, the women weren't doing too much hands on fighting, but dayyum did they know how to handle a gun. I respected their strength though.

Sounds like my kind of movie. I guess I don't like most action flicks because I am noticing how the females dresses are so clean and hairsytles not the slightest messed up after she got into a fight with bad guys. Speaking of guy looks I liked Jimmy Smits look, but did not think he was gorgeous until I saw him in person. He is a case of someone who does not photgraph well.

It took me forever to find out what kind of car Wilson (Rick Gonzalez) was driving, but I finally found it. It's a 2006 Dodge Charger, and it was beautiful. Here's a link to the car for those who like cars like I do: http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e258/Shamontiel/2006DodgeCharger.jpg
