If you will be making a court room appearance, you must carefully consider what you will wear for the occasion. It does not matter if you will be up in court as a character witness or on trial for a traffic violation. Your appearance will say a lot about your personality and character as you stand before the judge and to others in the court room. Therefore, your dress should convey the right message.

How to Dress for a Court Room Appearance: Clothes

Men and women who show up to court should make every effort to wear a conservative, clean, ironed suit. If they cannot afford a full piece suit, women can wear a modest dress or skirt with a shirt that is not too tight, short or low cut. Men should try to at least wear a good pair of trousers and an ironed shirt. A tie would complete the look if they cannot afford a full three piece suit. TV court programmes often show people turning up in jeans, short skirts and other inappropriate clothes.

A court room appearance is not a casual gathering amongst friends. That is why it is inappropriate to show up to court looking that way. It shows disrespect to the judge and others in attendance. It can also send the wrong message to the judge that they are not taking the court room appearance seriously. Judges look at a person's dress and form their own opinions about people brought up before them.

How to Dress for a Court Room Appearance: Hair

Hair should be neat and tidy when turning up at court. The judge should be able to look at someone in the eyes when talking to them, rather than talking through a layer of hair that is swept across someone's eyes. Faddish hairstyles should be reserved for occasions outside of the court room. Remember that it is very important to create the right impression in front of the judge.

How to Dress for a Court Room Appearance: Sunglasses

Takeaways
  • Men and women should make the effort to wear a suit to their court room appearance
  • Clothes should not to too tight, short or casual
  • Hair should be swept back from the eyes so that the judge can make eye contact
Did You Know?
Unless you have a problem with your eyesight, you should avoid wearing sunglasses in front of a judge

Very good article. Important especially to a generation who seems to care little about respect.

Thanks for the comments. It just goes to show that appearances mean a lot more than some people think. Sophie

Great article. I actually had a similar one on the "to-do list." Courtroom attire can be very important, but even when you do dress the most appropriately, it may not matter.

Great article! One of my cousins is an attorney and he says that you can win or loose the jury with their first impression of the defendant and mostof it has to do with their outfit.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to wear sunglasses in court, unless it was to hide his eyes so he would feel more comfortable lying. This is very good information, and hopefully I never have to use it!

I love to watch Judge Judy. She chastises litigants who show up in outfits like shorts and tee shirts, revealing tops, short skirts, etc. Plus, an attorney friend of mine sometimes gets chewed by judges because she wears "too little in court". A very good read!

lol, I was the first woman to do personal applications through our pety debts court, who was not a solicitor, you would be flabergasted by what some people wear to court. Like you I know what to wear in court. Good article, what you wear really does make a difference.
