With my job as an IT Manager, I do quite a bit of traveling. I try to visit my staff in Minneapolis, Minnesota at least a few times a year. Aside from that, at times, I do side trips to Scottsdale, AZ and Dallas, TX. I do not have much time in between trips to these cities when I take them altogether so I try to really plan on the trip and make it so that I make the most of my business trips.

While for the most part, doing a business trip can be cumbersome, it is necessary in building stronger bond and rapport with your staff and business partners, meeting new people, and generating new ideas that can expand your business knowledge. It is really important to make the most of your business trips after all; they can be costly so you would want to be successful in making the most out of these trips.

I'd like to share some tips that helped me through with my travels enabling me to make the most out of my business trips:

1) Set Goals: You should know what you need to accomplish on your next business trip. Do you want to accomplish a major task or multiple tasks? Setting goals can help in setting up realistic expectations for yourself as well as those you would be dealing with. Setting and knowing these objectives ahead of time will help you manage your time well while giving you a good sense of direction.

2) Plan Itinerary: It is very important to plan ahead, from the dates and times you are going to your business trips. Make sure that the people you would want to meet up with are in town on those dates, so keeping them in the loop is necessary. Your itinerary should match up with your goals and the time frame you have given yourself and others to accomplish things.

Takeaways
  • Setting goals ahead of time can give you an overview of what you want to accomplish.
  • Setting up meetings and appointments ahead of time can help you get organized.
  • Send agenda items and assign tasks and deliverables before leaving to save time.

I hate going on business trips but try to make the best of it by ending my trip in a great place. Then I'll take a personal day or two on the weekend to sight see. Thanks!

This is a great article. Great tips. I'm going to have my daughter read this one. Sometimes her job calls for traveling, not as much as it used to. She needs to learn how to unwind and relax more. A very good write.
