Since the first school opened on September 21, 1829, to the present, the Baltimore City Public School System has seen its share of tumultuous times, which includes but is not limited to poor funding, limited resources, low-achieving students, low, state test scores and teacher shortages. I found it intriguing that after nineteen superintendents, Dr. Andre Alonso would leave the New York City Department of Education to make a difference in Baltimore City. Alonso emerged from an emotionally disturbed special education classroom environment, with the experience of being a mentor teacher, staff developer, program coordinator and curriculum writer. Many were not sure how confident they could be in a man who was originally from Cuba, only living in the United States since the age of 12. However, I must say that I have full confidence in Dr. Alonso after encountering him only once.
The BCPSS Office of Parent Involvement and School, Family, and Community Connections hosted School Community Conversations meetings. I attended one of the five meetings, prior to the start of the school year, at Coppin State University on Wednesday, July 25, 2007. This was an opportunity for parents, BCPSS employees and students to meet the new CEO, Dr. Alonso. During this meeting, the participants were invited to share school issues, questions and concerns about the school system's progress.
After I walked into the building, I was pleasantly greeted by a student, asked to sign in and received information about BCPSS' policies, programs, and the safety plan in a neatly arranged folder. I was then directed to the new dining hall, where a light fare was served, consisting of a three course meal, fruit punch and a choice of desert.
I cannot say that I expected a calm and peaceful atmosphere due to the many issues that parents, teachers and students face within the school system. However, it was very calm.
