Building a new home is so exciting. You have a blank canvas, ready for whatever kind of painting you want to create.

I felt the same way when I was ready to choose the blue prints for my dream house. I had no idea that choosing blue prints was such a big deal, but now I do.

Here are five tips that I created after my own journey through this part of the home building process was complete. I will gladly save you many days of wanting to pull your own hair out and feeling the need to karate chop whoever is closest to you!

When I decided to build my home, I wanted to have custom drawn house blue prints, so I could include the features that I wanted. I had really thought about things and wanted some specific things to be incorporated into the design.

I decided to forgo my original plan of having a secret room to hide my husband when the guests came over, and chose to go with a rather large formal dining room.

I had everything planned and a great visual of how it would come out. That brings me to my first tip. Whether you're having your plans custom drawn or just choosing stock house blue prints, you need to see several sets before you choose the one you want.

It's difficult for a person who isn't experienced with house blue prints to visualize the proportion of the rooms to each other. You may have one idea of how things are going to look, but the actual house may come out completely differently from what you thought.

You end up thinking, 'what the heck is this,' but it's because of the proportions. The first person I talked with about my house blue prints was a real jerk. He wanted to do things his way without explaining to me why they should be done this way.

That brings me to the second tip. Find someone who will listen and explain things to you, so that you can come out with the house you've been dreaming of. The third tip is, sometimes because of this, it's easier just to select from stock house blue prints.

You know right up front what you're getting, and a lot of places will have models set up so you can visually comprehend the proportions.
