At the heart of the abortion issue is the question: when does life begin? Some people think that life begins at conception; others think that life begins at birth, when a baby takes its first breath of air, still others think that a baby is alive when it can survive outside the mother's womb which can be as early as 23 weeks(this is fetal age, a woman would be 25 weeks pregnant at this point). In fact, the Roe v. Wade decision was based upon viability, saying that the concerns of the fetus can only take precedence over the mother's after it has developed to the point where it could be sustainable in a hospital. For those who are religious, they wonder when the soul enters the fetus, and say that at that moment, the baby is alive; the requirement for personhood is the soul and a fetus is a person when it has one.

The Roe v. Wade decision seems to say that the fetus is alive at a certain stage of development; this is when the organs are all fully formed. The latest stages of pregnancy are times for growth, not development. This is how premature babies can live; their heart and lungs are at a functioning capacity, but the weight gain and bone growth are minimal, so that when they are born, they can fit in a man's hand.

All this aside, the question of when life begins still stands. If life begins at 23 weeks, what are those prior weeks called? Merely potential? At 15 weeks, is a fetus potentially alive, but not alive yet?

Human life can logically only begin at the beginning (conception). When else would it begin? It can't begin in the middle, or it can't begin in the end, then it would not be the beginning. At the very moment of conception the newly formed fertilized egg shows major signs of life. First, once the sperm penetrates the egg, the new cell immediately seeks to defend itself from other intruders by forming a protective shell around itself. It wards off other sperm cells and anti-bodies from the mother's. This sign of life is called Self-Defense. Second, the cell leaves the ovum and floats independently for six days down the Fallopian Tube to implant itself. This sign of life is called Self-Autonomy. Third, the cell begins to replicate itself. Dead organisms do not replicate, only live ones do. Cellular specification is already programmed into the cell. This sign of life is called Growth. Fourth, the replicating cell know as the blastocist, seeks out nourishment an

That's just the thing Jennifer. We do not choose to be born, we are born- it's called nature. All things are a part of that, conscious or not. Life is life regardless of the mind that does or does not accomany it. Trees are just as alive as people are, they just dont have the mental capacity; the arguement is absent of consciousness because the conscience does not decide what life is, life does. I think you missed the point.

Bad analogy. If the ground was conscious and decided it did not want to be the host for the sprouting seed, maybe it would have been a better one.

Excellent analogy. I agree. I will never understand how it's okay to refer to a living being as not being alive just because he or she is inside the womb. All living things need some sort of growing process. That doesn't mean a life should be cut short because the process hasn't been completed. You might enjoy my article "Abortion: Choice Of Life".
