When most people think of sled dogs, the Alaskan Malamute usually comes to mind. The Alaskan Malamute has Nordic origins.

The Alaskan Malamute is a descendant of the Arctic wolf and are one of the oldest dog breeds. Alaskan Malamutes are named after the Alaskan tribe that first raised Malamute dogs thousands of years ago. The Alaskan Mahlemuit tribe used Malamutes for transportation and to haul necessary supplies and food. Today, besides being used as sled dogs, Alaskan Malamutes are trained for search and rescue missions and weight pulling contests. Alaskan Malamutes are also popular pets.

Alaskan Malamutes have very thick, double coats and curved plumed tails. Alaskan Malamutes come in gray, white, black and white, and sable colors. The average Alaskan Malamute height is about 24 inches. Alaskan Malamutes are very strong dogs and solidly built. Alaskan Malamutes are supposed to have brown eyes similar to wolves. However, some Alaskan Malamutes have beautiful blue eyes. Unfortunately, blue eyes disqualify an Alaskan Malamute from AKC competitions.

Regardless of age, Alaskan Malamute dogs are lively and very playful. Malamutes never meet a stranger. Malamutes are surprisingly mellow when they become adults. But they still enjoy play time. Alaskan Malamutes are loyal and affectionate toward their families and get along well with older children. Regardless of their appearance, Malamutes are friendly dogs and don't make good guard dogs.

Alaskan Malamutes are happiest when they are kept outdoors. Make sure to have a high fence. Malamute dogs enjoy outdoor, strenuous activities and play. Malamutes are proficient diggers. If you have a meticulously manicured lawn, a Malamute may not be a good dog choice. Malamutes can be happy if kept inside, but need daily exercise. If left to their own devices, Malamutes can become bored and be very destructive. Malamutes aren't recommended for apartment or city living.
