All About Boxer Breeds: Appearance to Training

The Boxer breed is an old dog breed, dating back to ancient Greek times. The original ancestors of the modern Boxer dog breed were two German dog breeds that were similar to Mastiffs. Later, these
dogs were crossed with the predecessors to the modern Mastiff and Bulldog. Boxers were bred to hunt and pull carts for supplies and food. The name 'Boxer' originated from the dog breed's tendency to rise up on its hind legs with its front paws in front when fighting.

Male Boxers are about 23 inches tall, and females are about 22 inches high at the withers. The average weight of a Boxer dog is about 60-65 pounds. Boxer breed dogs are solidly built, with lots of muscle. They have a squared head and trunk. Usually, a Boxer's tail is docked. The ears of a Boxer dog may be cropped or left hanging naturally. The coat of a Boxer may be fawn, red, or a beautiful brindle. However, red Boxer breeds are disqualified from AKC events. Boxer dogs have powerful jaws with a distinctive underbite. Potential Boxer owners should be made aware of a few negative characteristics that most Boxer dogs possess. These are snoring, flatulence, and drooling.

According to the AKC, the Boxer dog breed is the seventh most popular dog breed in the United States. Boxer dogs are energetic, playful, happy go lucky, affectionate, and intelligent dogs. Boxers are one of the most loyal dog breeds. Boxers love people. They have excellent temperaments and adore children. They are very protective of their family. Boxers make great guard dogs. Most Boxers get along with other pets in the household, even cats. Boxers have one of the best dog temperaments and personalities of any of the dog breeds. Boxer dogs are easy to train if the training is started when a Boxer is still a puppy.

Boxers really have no serious negative personality traits. Boxer breed dogs may be stubborn and independent. This is why training is needed while they are still puppies. They can be too enthusiastic when greeting people. Boxers are notorious for jumping on people when meeting them. This is easily cured if trained while still a puppy.

My great aunt had two boxers. They scared me to death so I never learned to like the breed. But they are beautiful animals.

Oh, Tyson- what a terrible name! Boxers are fantastic dogs. We came so close to keeping one that actually escaped from the nearby pound. Sadly, we were in an apartment at the time that didn't allow pets. But we managed to find a home for her before the day was over. She didn't have to return to that bad pound!
