A baby's name will shape their personality. When choosing your child's name you should put a lot of thought in to it before making the final decision. Here are some tips on helping to name your new little bundle of joy.Put aside your family's tradition and choose what name you would like between the two of you. The elderly relatives seem to want to put their input in what the baby should be named but just remember their age and that most children are not name Gertrude any longer. Your will baby will have to deal with it's name for the rest of it's life, so they may as well not have to be ridiculed by the name.
Think of the big picture. You don't want your child harassed by their name. If they are they will just end up being called a nickname. Don't name your child after a childhood crush, celebrity, or cartoon character. Especially girls, don't turn a boys name in to a girls name. If John is the dad, don't name your baby Johnella.
Before putting the final stamp of approval on your child's name, make sure that you have written the baby's name out on paper to see if their initials stand for something that you do not want it to.
It can be hard to name your child after a family member. With two sides of the family someone's feelings are bound to get hurt. That could put a damper on any relationships from there on out. So you may want to come up with a new name that isn't in the family tree.
When deciding on a name, make sure that it isn't too complicated to spell. That child will have to spell their name out to people for the rest of their life. Just think about how many times you have spelled your name to someone on the phone. Finding personalized items with an uncommon spelled name is very frustrating.
Start a new tradition and the two of you come up with a baby name. It will be unique to the two of you and will help bond the three of you. One side won't feel resentment because the baby is named after the other's mother.
In the end, remember it is best not to name the baby after a relative, with an odd or misspelled name, or with initials that could end being the laugh of an entire third grade class.
