Springfield, the capitol of Illinois, is rich in memories of President Abraham Lincoln, who lived in Springfield for 24 years before moving to Washington, D.C. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library contains materials that relate to the history of the prairie state. The library was created in 1189 to preserve books, pamphlets, manuscripts, monographs, writings and materials of historical interest about the history of the State of Illinois. The new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library continues the mission of the original library. The Library is a public, non-circulation research facility where material on all aspects of Illinois history can be found.
Springfield is home to the final leg of the Lincoln Trail, which traces the life of President Abraham Lincoln from his birth in Kentucky to his boyhood in Indiana and to his young adulthood in Springfield before being elected President of the United States. Abraham Lincoln became a lawyer in Springfield and began his political career in the state.
