September is Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month

Did you know that September is National Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month? It seems that Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month originated in San Antonio, Texas. The group who initiated the national observance also has implemented at least three other observances. March is Humorists are Artists month. April is International Twit Award month. July is Be Nice to New Jersey week. The group headed by Lauren Scharf, has a website and a Texas mailing address where you can receive more information about these national observances.

If you would like to show your appreciation to your editor or writer loved one, the online greeting company 123Greetings offers free greeting cards in recognition of the national observance. Their stance on this topic is the world would be a dull place without editors and writers.

You may be asking yourself, what you can do to be kind to the editor or writer in your life. Here are a few ideas:

Sharpen all the pencils in the house. A writer needs one!

Stay off the computer. A writer might have an epiphany just as you are winning your game of Solitaire.

Do not interrupt your loved one while they are working. I have lost many ideas this way.

Do not let your toddler use the computer paper as a doodle pad. What if I have an award-winning novel at my fingertips? There will not be one sheet of paper to print it on.

If your writer/editor loved one is Blonde, take the initiative to clean the white-out off of the computer screen.

Make plenty of coffee; everyone knows that writers always wait until the last minute to finish a project. They will be up until 3 a.m. trying to decide if they should use "media is" or "media are".

Offer to baby-sit for the writer/editor in your life. They might not get any work done, but the kids will be out of their hair for a while!

While I have made fun of the observance, it is a real September observance. The greeting cards really are available. Writing and editing can be a thankless job, so let your writer/editor loved one know you appreciate them.
