A touch of sunflowers in this easy mat project is sure to brighten up any kitchen! Vinyl flooring scraps can be easily purchased or found at most flooring stores or by calling flooring contractors for cheap or even free.

For this project, you will need:

- A three foot by two foot section of light colored vinyl flooring (with one side that is unetched and completely smooth)

- Detergent designed for vinyl flooring

- High quality latex based primer

- Dark blue latex paint

- Bright yellow latex paint

- Medium brown latex paint (for flower details)

- Paint roller

- Artist's paintbrush (for flower details)

- Simply Stamps Tuscan Sunflower Foam Craft Stamp (available in stores or online at Plaid Online)

- Polyurethane sealant

Begin by washing the rectangular piece of vinyl well with a detergent designed for vinyl flooring. Make sure the vinyl is completely dry before continuing.

With a paint roller, apply one to two coats of high quality latex based primer. This is probably the most important step in the project, and should not be skipped. Keep in mind that the higher quality primer you use, the longer the paint on your design is going to last and the better it will adhere. Allow the primer to dry for a couple hours before continuing.

Again with a paint roller, apply three to four coats of dark blue latex paint. Once the paint has dried, you can begin adding your sunflower details. With the artist's paintbrush, add bright yellow latex paint directly onto the Simply Stamps Tuscan Sunflower Foam Craft Stamp. Press the stamp firmly in one corner of the square of vinyl. Repeat this process, stamping a flower every two to four inches around the border of the mat.

Once the flowers have dried, fill in the details for the center of the flowers with medium brown latex paint and an artist's paintbrush. You can remain simple with just one color brown, or mix and match the colors for an added creative touch.

When all paint details have dried, apply two to three coats of a top quality polyurethane sealant. Allow the vinyl mat to dry overnight before using.
