In the book by James Patterson, 4th of July, Detective Lindsay Boxer and the Women's Murder Club, are invited back for their most thrilling case yet. One that unfortunately could be their last.
In the middle of a dreary night in San Francisco, police lieutenant Lindsay Boxer is involved in a near-fetal car chase, and has to fire her weapon in self defense. These events cause a ricochet that leaves Lindsay is dismay after finding out that her decisions have caused disgrace to the police force, has put an entire town in an uproar, and has put a family at odds with one another. Her entire career as a San Francisco police detective rides on the decision of twelve jurors to decide her fate.
With her life turned upside down from the trial, the first chance she gets, she escapes to the one place that she knows she can find peace and solitude from the media and people who want to question her about the trial. She retreats to the quaint town of Half Moon Bay. There she finds comfort in the place that has always made her feel at home and welcomed. Soon after her arrival, Lindsay finds out about the ghastly murders that have been occurring in the silence of the night. There appears to be no witnesses to the murders, nor any perceptible patterns have been discovered.
Once Lindsay starts to review the cases she reveals a detail that sticks out to her that reminds her of her rookie year. The murder that she never solved and has haunted her ever since.
With this newfound case and the trial ahead of her, she is not getting the peace that she desperately needed. Soon, she finds herself and her friends in a world wind battle for her life when she learns that she has become to close to finding the truth out about what is going on in Half Moon Bay. Unknown assailants have began to follow her and now she has to fight for her life literally. She knows now that she must find who out who is doing the killings in the small town in order to keep herself from being the next victim.
