When most people hear the word "felt" many think of a sheet of felt sold in art stores. If you have heard of "felting" as an art form you may have heard of the art of needle felting but, more likely are only familiar with the wet felting process, or wet felting used to give a felted texture to knitting. Even if you are familiar with this art form, this article may change your perception of what can be created with needle felting. If you are familiar with both wet felting and needle felting skip to #3, for those who have never heard of any type of felting:

1. What is felting or felted?
Felting is creating something made of interlocking fibers. Felt or felted is another way to refer to those interlocking fibers. One way to create a felted object is by wet felting, rubbing soapy wet fibers together. You can also wet felt a knitted object, by washing it. This can be used to create an object durable enough to be worn.

2. What is needle felting?
Needle felting is very different from creating a felted object out of knitting, or any other wet felting process. It does not involve knitting and it is a dry process of interlocking fibers or felting. Is it done with special barbed felting needles. These needles have also been used to root doll hair, but are available in more sizes for needle felting. The barbs on the needles catch fibers and enable them to be sculpted by hand. Typically, objects created this way aren't durable enough to go in the wash, but can be worn as jewelry. More commonly, they are 3D sculptures, or 2D felted pictures for display only.

I was recently doing needle felting, bought all the tools etc and it was really fun..the biggest issue for me was I stabbed my fingers accidently with the needles and I thought I was going to jump out of my chair from the pain. Also, the dog you made is just stunning, it reminds me of my little yorkie who passed away last year, I had adopted her from the shelter and they thought she was about 7 or 8 years old when I got her, I had her for 7 years so she did live a long life but I was just devasted when she passed. Thank you for such a wonderful article.

Also far as eBay artist not responding, I did get responses, but in an eBay forum for artists & collectors. As an eBay artist, I get lots emails and try to respond to them all, but interested buyers are put in priority, there may not be time to answer some questions for other busy artists. I have also gotten requests, as have a few others to recreate someone else's art, which I have to turn down. So, they may be cautious of the question for that reason.

Thanks :) Copyright can depend on where you live, but rules are like any other art.For example, if you draw a picture or take your own photo, you retain copyright by default. No one's supposed to use a photo belonging to someone else without permission &they're not suposed to say they created something they didn't.As far as copying, handmade art comes out different made by different hands &may be hard to prove that type of copying.Ask your lawyer friend about art &if there's paid copyrights with more protection like a specific brandname.

Your site is very nice. I just got into needle felting and will be making my own idea creations. I see you have copyrights on your items and would like to do the same. I find that the artists on ebay WILL NOT respond when I ask them how to copyright items...which makes me wonder if some on there are saying they are when they are not. I mean I'm not making thier item but my own and would like people to not be able to copy my items either. If I knew the info and someone asked me I would definately tell them how to go about it. Since you seem to be nice in sharing your items I thought I would ask you how to go about it. I am in contact with a lawyer though email but he doesn't seem familiar with needle felting and said I had to copyright each one I do instead of like a blanket copyright? Can you tell me your experience with costs and how to go about doing this. Thanks so much! Susan
