Being a commuter student at college is not always easy. While the students that are living on campus are immersed in collegiate life twenty-four hours a day, the commuter student has to make their social connections in a few short hours, and this is not always easy, particularly if the student does not have an outgoing personality. Fortunately, there are some things that can be done to make being a commuter student easier.

Just because you do not live on campus does not mean that you can't be involved in student organizations. You are, after all, a student and are paying all of the same fees except for dorm costs. Investigate what organizations and clubs are available and join one or more of them. This is a great way to meet people with similar interests and to help you feel more connected to the rest of the school.

Form or join study groups. You can meet at the local coffee shop to study, and sometimes bonding can be done over something as basic as stress over an upcoming test.

Some colleges offer commuter programs that offer services such as newsletters that inform you of different amenities that are offered for the commuter student, such as commuter lounges. These programs can also keep you up to date on different types of gatherings that might help you to socialize.

If you have any sort of interest in sports, get involved in intramurals. Most schools have several types of intramural sports, such as basketball, volleyball and even karate. This is a good way to stay in shape and to meet people.

Getting a job on campus can also give you plenty of opportunity to meet people, if for no other reason than that you are spending more time on campus.

If you have friends from high school that live on campus, take advantage of this opportunity to spend some time in their residence hall. This is a good way to meet people, and become more familiar with the part of the campus that you would not normally see.
