The benefit of having a larger dog is that when the dog is attacked it takes a lot to harm the dog. Smaller dogs often can have their organs punctured by a larger dog. As soon as you see a large dog heading your way you will want to pick up your dog and walk the other direction. People should keep their dogs in their sight when they are outdoors. The dog is on their property but when it runs up to you on the street, it is not. Go with your gut instincts and protect yourself and the dog.
Larger dogs can protect you from other larger dogs. With small dogs it's hard for them to protect themselves. It's a very sad sorry when a small dog is killed by a larger dog because the owner wasn't paying attention. Always keep an eye out down the road for dogs running loose. If you take different walks on different roads you will most likely run into a few dogs every now and then. That's why it's best to stick to the same path if you can. At least then you know what to expect. If you run into a dog several times that is sitting outside unattended, travel on the next road over to avoid meeting this dog.
