Sammy Kershaw announced his candidacy and intentions to run in the upcoming election as a Republican for the Lt. Governor of the State of Louisiana back in the summer. He has an official website that states his platform and expectations. This week he made that commitment official as he qualified to run on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 and filed all documents with the Secretary of State's Office.

Kershaw announced he was running for Lt. Governor on June 13, 2007 and has been fairly laid back since that announcement. As qualifying comes to an end today, only three other candidates have qualified for the race. Mitch Landrieu, Democrat, currently holds the incumbent position and will likely be Kershaw's main opponent to worry about. Two other candidates also qualified. They are Thomas Kates and Norris "Spanky" Gros (no relation to me!), who are both non-party affiliates. Gary Beard of Baton Rouge and a State Representative also announced he would run but as of noon today, he still hasn't qualified through the Secretary of State's office.

Kershaw was born in Abbeville, Louisiana but grew up in Kaplan, LA. He lost his father at the early age of 11 and worked hard to make ends meet for the family. He didn't take off as a country music star until the 1990's when Mercury Records signed him. His first album debuted in 1991. He now resides in Abbeville and also has a residence in Nashville, Tennessee. His residence in Nashville has already been questioned and may be cause for him to be disqualified to run for office in the State of Louisiana.
