Product Review: Yaz Oral Contraceptives

A Perspective from an Over 40 User

Okay, I'll admit I was drawn in by the slick advertisements for Yaz, a new type of birth control pill that promises relief from those dreaded PMMD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a more sever form of pre-menstrual syndrome with the following symptoms: irritability, fatigue, bloating,
cramping, et al. I had not been diagnosed formally with PMMD until I asked my doctor about Yaz. She then asked me to keep a calendar for a month. Based on that calendar, she did feel Yaz was appropriate for my symptoms.

I'm over 40, generally healthy with no history of breast cancer or liver disease, so my gynecologist thought I would be a good candidate. I'm now on my third pack. Just for the record, I am just a layman...a 40 + woman who is tired of dreading five days every month. I have no medical expertise and this product review is just based on my opinion.

The good news is that Yaz does make your periods much lighter and shorter. The pills are now, 90 days after starting them, actually beginning to have an impact on my PMS symptoms. This month, my period started on time, but without the usual build-up. That was a good relief. The pill is also 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. You can start the day you start your period or the Sunday following your start. Each pack contains four placebo pills, which

Now, the bad news. Yaz doesn't work immediately. My doctor told me that seldom were the promised results achieved during the first month, but were almost always achieved by the third month. So, you have to be patient (which may be very difficult in those days leading up to your period). The contraceptive does begin working in the first month of use.

The drug also has a lot of side effects. I personally experienced these symptoms during the first two months: some flu-like symptoms (runny nose, headache), a rash and dehydration. I called my doctor and, since my side effects were tolerable, she advised me to give my body a chance to adjust. All side effects went away by the third month.

Looking back, I think the benefits I'm enjoying now were worth experiencing the side effects for a few weeks.

I am 14 and had severe cramping and mild acne. My doctor prescribed Yaz for me to take and so far the only side effect I have gotten is some increased discharge. I have been on it for three weeks. Reading the reviews for this pill though... it makes me nervous. I am sorry for all of those that have had bad side affects from it and am starting to feel it would be best to talk to my doctor about stopping... anyone think I am over reacting? I hope I am.

I'm sorry about your sister, Kelly. I did not realize the side affects were so serious.

This drug Yaz killed my sister 4 years ago. A doctor put her on it for menopausal symptoms. Two months after being on the drug she died from blood clots. I am still very sad.To anyone out there please don't take this drug and do you know if there is anything we can do to hold this company accountable for killing my sister. We talked to an attorney but they said we cannot get justice because of the warning labels.

I have been taking YAZ for around a year now, and am 22 years old. I'm in the marching band at my university, and over the past three months, I've developed heart palpitations that come as often as every 15 seconds during activity. I've been depressed with anxiety disorder since I started taking the pill, and it is only within the past couple weeks that I've made the connection between my symptoms and YAZ. I called my doctor after my heart stopped for around 8 seconds last week, and she told me to stay on YAZ because it was the best medicine for my PCOS. Basically, I refused. She told me my symptoms would have been gone after 3 months, and that the heart problems were in now way attributed to YAZ. I took myself off the medicine anyway. I'm afraid it's going to kill me. I'm also getting a new OB/GYN who knows what she is talking about, because after reading thousands of threads on the internet about other peoples experiences with YAZ, there has to be some validity to the claim t

I am very sorry to here about your friend, I developed the same symptoms as she did--at first i thought I was coming doing with some type of bug, it started out as fatigue, shortness of breath, leg pain, severe headache. I ignorned the symptoms the first couple of days because I thought maybe it was the flu. My headache was so severe that ibuprofen 800 mg wasnt touching it, I couldnt walk from my bedroom to my living room which is about 12 feet, I really knew something was wrong then. I was seen in the er and was told if i would have went walking, jogging or any strenous activities--5 minutes I would have been dead, so if anyone on here who is taking this med--please be aware of the signs and symptoms, I am so grateful to GOD, that I am here to share my story....

I started taking yaz, the first week of Aug. of 2008, I had my yearly pap and i was explaining to my doctor that at the age of 37 years i am still having trouble with acne, irritable, bloating, mood swings and that is when she recommended yaz. In the beginning I really liked the pill because it didnt make me sick or anything, just this past week i was admitted to the hospital with two pulmonary embolisms of each lung and i have blood clots also in my legs, i am currently on medication--Lovenox injections twice daily and coumadin once daily, before all of this I was a healthy 37 year old, never smoked a day in my life and this is my story. So if you know of anyone who is taking this medication, please stop them from taking it, i was told if I wouldnt have went to the emergency room I would have been dead.........

My gyno started me on YAZ a few months ago. I started it and everything was okay no real changes in the way i felt but after a couple weeks i noticed that my hair was falling out terribly. I didn't realize that it was from the birthcontrol. I stopped taking it after on full pack and lost about a third of my hair which still hasn't started growing back. CRAZY!!!

I had a friend that was on this. She was a perfectly healthy 20 year old and didn't smoke. She started developing flu-life symptoms that turned into respiratory infection-like symptoms. She saw several doctors, and no one knew what was wrong with her. She passed away 2 weeks ago and after the autopsy, they determined that she had developed a blood clot that had killed her. The autopsy report attributed her death to Yaz.

I just started Yaz. So far no side effects and no differences. I'll give it a few weeks to kick in...
