A lot of these social networking sites like MySpace have tried there best to keep their users safe as possible, but it is not something they can control. It is way too easy to put up fake profiles with fake identities.
Many of these sexual predators will spend up to six months making your child believe that they have made an honest trust worthy friend. With your children giving out so much information online to this people, by the end of the time period the predator knows almost all there is to know about the child even where they live. It then becomes easy to set up an encounter in person because your child trusts this person.
Social networking sites are not bad such as MySpace. The bad part is the inability of monitoring the people that abuse these sites.
This is where parental responsibility has to come in to stop this from happening. Have continual discussions with your child on what is appropriate and what is not as far as giving out personal information on the internet. You taught your child not to up to a stranger on the street and give out personal information teach them not to give out such information on the internet. It is vital that they understand that the internet is no different.
Monitor your child's internet activity. Know your child's user name and password. Know what they are posting and to who. Place limits on how long your child can be online and what hours they can be on. Social networking sites later in the evening seem to be a higher risk time.
Your internet service provider can provide parental controls and there is software available to block certain sites.
