Each and every year starting in early December I look forward to the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree episode. Even as a child I can remember hearing the familiar sounds of the opening piano chords and running for the television. Each of the characters in their very innocence exhibit what is best and worst about the Christmas season and even now, I sit down with my children to enjoy this classic.

In the opening scenes Charlie Brown views many of his friends with disdain as they try to create a Christmas that is all about getting, not giving. Who could forget the greed of Sally, when writing her letter to Santa about all the things that she wants for Christmas? I can always laugh at the antics of the Red Baron/Snoopy as well as look at the decorations and lights all around his dog house and look across the street to my neighbors to see almost the exact same thing. The scene depicting the whole gangs' re-enactment of the nativity is so very true. How many times did any of us participate in a church or group nativity scene where there were more directors than actors? Charlie Brown reminds me of my father a little, when he says, "What is the real meaning of Christmas!" "What is Christmas all about?!" Linus rebukes every one with his poignantly described birth of Jesus and a nativity scene that touches everyone's heart and makes them realize that there is more to Christmas than pageants and presents.

This year you, your family, and friends do not have to wait for this classic Christmas tale to appear on television. Running Press Book Publishers has made a "gift" set available which includes a 128 page paperback book designed to be read by and with ages 4-8, but I know that I can take a few minutes every night to read a few pages to even my little ones and have the story finished by Christmas. This book comes with an adorable mini tree straight from the cartoon itself. Its very simplicity brings back memories of the story. A small Christmas ball adorns one lone branch and Linus' blanket is fondly draped around the tree stand.
