Most people do not want a raccoon as a pet. They are wild animals and you see them mainly at night rummaging through people's trash. However, if you find a baby raccoon it can be raised and behave somewhat like a cat. Raccoons are known to be very mischievous and should be watched at all times so they do not hurt themselves. Like any wild animal, raccoons can turn to be somewhat wild even in captivity. About 80% of the United States does not allow you to have a raccoon for any reason, even if you found the raccoon in the middle of the street, half alive. In about 10 states, you can have a raccoon only if you have found this raccoon and raised it from birth and you have to have a permit also.

If you do your research you will be able to find out what the rules are for wild animals. Most states do not allow you to have any type of wild animal. If you get caught the animal will be taken and you will face a fine.

Even if you get a raccoon when it is very small you will still face the problem of the raccoon biting. This is because raccoons will bite when they get scared. If anything scares your raccoon it will bite you.

Don't expect that this raccoon will only live several years. Raccoons can live to be well over ten years old. This means that you are committed to this raccoon for a long time and they take up a lot of time. They need attention. You can't just raise a raccoon and let it roam around your house while you are at work. Raccoons are best for people who stay at home and have a lot of time to dedicate to this animal.

You will need to place water out for the raccoon. You can teach them to use a litter box. You will need to look up different food you can feed your raccoon. Raccoons will eat anything they can find in the wild, including trash but this is not the healthiest thing for a raccoon. You don't want to just feed your raccoon all of your table scraps every day. You will need to find food with vitamins and minerals.

You will need to find a vet that will care for your raccoon. You don't want to have an emergency and have no vets around you that will care for the raccoon. Make sure that these animals are allowed in your state before showing up to the vet clinic with a raccoon.
