For years I have collected various Cacti and Succulents. I just love how they look and the character they add to a home. I started out with just a few then I slowly gained a few more and then more until I had a wide variety. In this process of collecting I learned home to care for them by reading about it and doing it in a trial by error sort of way. If there is one thing that I learned in my journey of plants it is that cacti and succulents are some of the easiest plants to care for. I have several tips for you that have worked wonders for me over the years.

Picking the plants for you and your home is almost as important as their care. There are many different cacti and succulents plants to choose for. Shop around. There are cacti that colored, funky shaped or more normal for those of you who don't want to experiment with the extremes. No matter what you choose there is at least one cactus for everyone that will catch your fancy and if not there are always those succulents that come in even more colors, shapes and sizes. Or you can make a mix of both as I have. They make for fun and different conversation pieces than the average house.

Sunlight or man made light is the next step. While some of these plants may be picky on the amount of sun they prefer most really are not. I have these plants all threw out my home no matter how much sunlight. I will rephrase that, I have them in all different types of light. Some in darker or dimmer lights and some in windows that get bright light. Which ever you choose just remember that they do need light in some way or another whether human made or natural light.

Heat is your next step. Cacti and succulents need it to be a comfortable temperature to survive. They do like it a little warmer than we may find comfy but they will live nicely in the area of warmth that we find comfortable. If you have a wood stove or a fireplace they really love to be around that area. Because it is hotter there than any where else it will allow them to get extra heat and still leave you being comfortable in your own home. If you do not have a woodstove or a fireplace then just trying to keep your home in the 70's most of the time seems to work just as well.
