The Truth About Vector Marketing: Selling CutCo Knives is Not a Walk in the Park

Selling CutCo Knives is Not a Walk in the Park

It's tempting for every student. Those ads are on the Internet, on the flyers in the hallways, and in the newspapers. It says that the work will earn them $10 per hour (really, it's only $10 per appointment and a commission, if any) and that they can choose their own working hours.
There are a lot of things that aren't true in this scenario.

A student calls the number and the secretary will say that the student will be selling housewares and will rattle off a huge list of items. While the secretary says this, there are much fewer items to be sold. The items that will be sold are kitchen knives, hunting knives, garden tools, an ice cream scoop, and a few other kitchen tools.

The first interview is simply filling out an application and giving it to a manager. There is no more to the interview. There is no more to the interview, either. It is not exclusive. There will be a group of people sitting in a small office filling out paper work. Then, if the student is chosen, they will get a phone call.

When the student goes in for an Interview, it really is not a formal interview. Again, a group of people will be there and the manager will talk all about the products that they are to sell. The manager will then pick people on how well they paid attention to the details. For what may be the first time in their lives, the students will be introduced to CutCo products.

CutCo is a company located in Olean, New York. They make high quality cutlery that is on par with both Wusthoff and Henckels. There is not a problem with CutCo's facts. Every thing that is stated by CutCo is perfectly true.

However, the marketing company, Vector, teaches those who are selling the knives to lie.

@Jack: You really think all the individuals who walked away during training were 'fired'? Oh my. You are indeed an innocent. Vector trainers eat greenhorns like you for breakfast. Come back here after all the pep talks are done ringing in your ears. Then tell us how much you spent, how much you made, how many contests you won. Also how many friends and relatives you exploited and how many strangers you foisted yourself upon. Then give us your cost-benefit analysis for the whole thing. I look forward to it.

I like the knives and detest the way they are sold. The approach is hardly necessary for a good product and in fact sullies the good reputation it would otherwise make for itself. Why does Cutco push its product in this disreputable manner year after year?

First of all, you can NEVER get fired from Vector. I could sign up again any time that I wanted because I'm signed up so all they need is my information. This article is hardly written out of anger for being fired. You are an independent contractor, just like I am for this site and another site where I do work at times. Calling poeple that you don't know is cold calling, no matter where you got the numbers. The hours they suggest calling are stupid - 6am! 10pm! As for retail stores, you KNOW there are taxes. Door-to-door type stuff, you don't. You are told to give a flat out price and the taxes and shipping make the stuff way more expensive! The office managers lie about those 3 month offices! They say, "We won't close this time. We'll be here after summer." Every single time I've walked into one, that's been the case. Vector is a horrible company with advanced fee fraud (didn't pay a thing to sign up here on AC or for the other site!) and teaches people to lie about

independent contractor you can account for all mileage and recieve a HUGE tax deduction. thats all i really remember from the article so idk post questions and i will certainly inform my manager to come to this site and answer them for anyone. oh yeah and the paychecks are sweet. my first 2 days, almost $100. and i only sold to like half the people.

customer is aware of this before we leave. all sales require a signature from the customer to finish the order form showing the full price. also yes the interview is in a group but they do only select a portion of the group so they are not just taking anyone that can lie. in addition, during training even more trainees are, well, fired, and do not return and do not sell cutco. also, yes there are offices that open for three months then close. well hmm lets look at that. the company sells far more cutco in summer than any other time. gee how long is summer? yeah well to account for the extra sales extra braches are opened for the 3 MONTHS and then closed at which time if the main brach the sales person would have to go to is too far away they can keep their discounted sample kit to sell to a customer or spend one trip to the main office and get the deposit back. as for gas. yes employees buy their own gas. but taxes are not taken out of your paycheck and as a result of you being an inde

well honestly i just got a job with vector starting saturday and i would have to say that this article just sounds like it was written by someone who is angry for getting fired from there. not to say thats the case cuz i have no clue. yes i will begin to call people i do not know but these people can very easily just say no we're not interested and they will never be bothered again. if they choose to allow someone to come to their house, we will only at MOST waste 90 minutes of their time in which the people were kind enough to spend allowing me to earn my base pay. as for lying, do you walk into a target and see something with the price as $19.99 and expect to pay that much. no. you know there is going to be tax. do you see a commercial for a product and expect it to be as much. no. there is always some small shipping fee. so yes we do tell them for example $110 and it comes out to be $130, but the customer is aware of this before we leave. all sales require a signature from the custo

If you don't want to pay anything, don't even bother going back. If it was only your first interview, then you're not even truly accepted yet. You have to go to yet another interview where you listen to them talk about the knives and do the rope and leather cutting demonstration. They you MIGHT be chosen . . . and some of the people there may be "plants" as well.

WATCH OUT FOR THESE SCAMMY SUMMER INTERNSHIPS. There are alot more companies that are just like this. I worked for a company called The Greek Telephone Directory (i think they call themselves ZTD now or something like that) but exactly the same scheme. They use students, pay them commission only to sell advertising on a college campus to local businesses in something they call the everly wide used greek life telephone directory, and give them a very small peice of commission. Its the worst job I have ever had. I sold my soul, I knew the products were terrible and I knew the prices were way to high. I left the job mid summer and started working at a real job. I suggest you do the same.

Oh my God, thank you so much for this article!! I just set up an interview with Vector and I knew by the sticky-sweet/fake tone of the receptionist that this was too good to be true. They say that you're not a door-to-door salesperson, but it's more like a "leech off of your relatives" salesperson. Plus, no matter how much you ask, they never outright tell you what you'll be doing to earn the $17 base pay. I'm calling to cancel my interview right this instant - and thank you again for saving me the time and gas!!!
