You can now check the Playstation and Playstation 2 software compatibility status on the newly released 80GB Playstation 3s. For those unfamiliar with 80GB Playstation 3, it was released as a bundle with the game, Motorstorm.

The 80GB Playstation 3 lacks the Emotion Engine chip needed for hardware emulation that was available on the now defunct 20GB and soon-to-be defunct 60GB Playstation 3s. The move was made by Sony in order to reduce the cost of the Playstation 3 and, as a result, lowered the price of the Playstation 3.

Instead of hardware emulation, software emulation was used to play Playstation and Playstation 2 games in the 80GB Playstation 3s. Consequentially, the Backward Compatibility in the 80GB Playstation 3s is not as good as the 20GB and 60GB Playstation 3s.

Although the problems may seem small right now, it will eventually be troublesome for many once Sony makes the 80GB Playstation 3 the standard SKU after all supplies of the 60GB SKU have been exhausted (which should be very soon).

With firmware updates, Sony is constantly improving the Playstation 3's Backward Compatibility with Playstation and Playstation 2 games for all SKUs.

To check if a particular Playstation and Playstation 2 game is compatible with your Playstation 3, visit the following link (note: although the 20GB Playstation 3 is not listed, it has the same compatibility as the 60GB Playstation 3):
