Breathe Pilates Introduces New Breast Cancer Fundraiser

As part of Shape Magazine's national campaign, Pilates for Pink, Breathe Pilates Studio in McDonough, Georgia will donate funds raised at fitness classes on Saturday October 13^th to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. More than 100 Pilates studios across the United States will participate in this program in October.

Research advances are changing the face of American health, and reports released earlier this year indicate that cancer deaths in the US have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2007, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation is on target to raise $34 million for research initiatives to find a prevention and a cure for breast cancer, in part due to innovative programs, like Pilates for Pink.

Pilates, an exercise system based on the work of Joseph Pilates, focuses on strengthening the "powerhouse" to improve posture, strengthen muscles and increase flexibility. Its emphasis on coordinating breath and movement encourages concentration and a balanced mind and body.

"Pilates is not your typical exercise class," according to Kelly Milton, owner of Breathe Pilates Studio. "It is an effective workout that helps improve flexibility and build muscle - without adding bulk. Pilates focuses on flexibility and strength training which will create long and lean muscles. Students will experience immediate improvement in posture, flexibility and balance. With dedicated practice, students will notice dramatic body transformations."

Milton became involved with raising funds for breast cancer prevention and a cure while participating in Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity at the University of Florida in Gainesville. "I have also had relatives have breast cancer and know the pain it causes. I think this is a wonderful way to help raise money and show people how wonderful Pilates is as well!"
