When a program is as successful as the Michigan Wolverines the U of M players should walk around with an arrogant attitude. The problem Michigan is dealing with now is a lack of confidence and their opponents are not worried about the Michigan mystique any longer. Michigan can thank Appalachian State for their timid play. No matter what kind of spin head coach Lloyd Carr put on their loss to a 1 double a team it is next to impossible for the team to believe they can just put that bad loss behind them, run the table, win the Big Ten and play in the Rose Bowl. The Michigan loss to Appalachian State was beyond demoralizing. The rest of Michigan's opponents now have the blueprint courtesy of Appalachian State on how to beat the Michigan Wolverines. For example, Oregon runs a spread offense and the Ducks have to believe that their skill position players are superior to Appalachians skill players. The Ducks also have a better defense and better running game. The Michigan fans belief that week one was a fluke and Coach Carr would have the boys ready for Oregon was quickly shattered when the Ducks led the Wolverines 32-7 at halftime in the Big House.
