It's another Wednesday night and I'm about to get my drink on with a friend who is late, as usual. Regardless, I have my rum and coke (even though it's Martini night) and a couple of movies my friend is going to borrow. The movies are Memento and Half Nelson; I just insisted that she watch the flicks. Since I'm drinking by myself at the moment and the place isn't busy, I talk to the bartender. She's a voluptuous brunette with amazing skin, but I digress...

She sees my dvds and we start talking about movies. Ironically not about the ones in my possession, except for the movie titles I give at her request. Even more to my surprise is that we're talking about movies that I really enjoy and not The Departed. I do tell her that Memento is a psychological thriller and she asks, "Have you ever seen The Prestige?"

"Yes!" goes my enthusiastic response.

The bartender goes on to tell me on how intense the movie made her feel. How there was absolutely no way she saw what was coming a second ahead any particular scene. I full-heartedly agreed. The Prestige is one of those mystical films that takes historical references and perfectly integrates them into a mind blowing experience-not to sound too Hollywood. Regardless, it's a hell of a film with a superb cast. Christian Bale plays a devious and dedicated magician while Hugh Jackman plays a pompous American magician that only knows the showmanship of the trade and not the creativity. It's a rare find that pulls off something most movies can't. Failed attempts are as followed:

Van Helsing

The Brother's Grimm

The Illusionist

The Wild Wild West (Will Smith version)

But I digress...

Actually, the bartender mentioned The Illusionist as a wretched off-shoot and I immediately responded with, "I fell asleep to that movie."

It's Martini Night.

What about Newsies? Quite possibly the best Christian Bale movie yet. Or maybe, I was drinking when I thought that.
