When you think of goats you might picture them living on a farm. To your surprise, a lot of people keep goats as pets. The majority of these goat pet owners keep dwarf versions of the goat. They stay small and therefore they are easy to manage and handle. You might think that a goat would be messy because you think of it as a farm animal but these animals can actually live in your home. Since goats love to be in herds you will most likely want to buy at least two goats. They do not do well by themselves. This also gives the goat something to do while you are gone whether it be at work or on the go in town.
If you live in the city you will most likely encounter problems keeping your goats because they do not allow farm animals in the city. If you are considered in the country however, you will be just fine. You will need plenty of room for the goats to run outside and get exercise. A fenced in yard would work out great for a pet goat or two. They also need to be brushed just like your dogs or cats would need to be brushed.
You will want to teach your goat to go outside and go to the bathroom. You will need to provide your goat with fresh water and some source of food. You can purchase goat food like anybody on a farm would have to do. Do not just feed your goats table scraps because this isn't healthy for your pets. You will need to find some type of vet that will take care of your goats when they are sick. Some vets will not work on farm animals so you will need to call around to see which vet will work best for you.
When you first get your goats you will need to take them to the vet for a checkup. You should also take them at least once a year for a routine check up. Make sure to keep the vets number on hand in case you run into any emergencies. Goats can be wonderful pets if you have the time to devote to them. Remember that goats love to headbutt, jump and climb. They do this by nature and it would be nearly impossible to get them to stop. Remember to check your local laws first before you purchase a few dwarf goats for your home and yard.
