Halloween Crafts: How to Make Your Own Pop Up Cards

You can make your own pop up greeting cards or party invitations by using these easy instructions. Pop up cards are fun for any holiday or occasion.

To make your pop up cards start with half a sheet of construction paper folded in half to make a card shape. When you are making pop up cards the folded section will be the top of the card. It will open up from the bottom.

Next, cut a two inch by five and a half inch strip of construction paper. It doesn't have to be the same color as your card. It can be any scrap piece of paper, because it is not going to show very much. It will be behind the pop up images when you're finished. Fold that strip of paper in half, and then fold each of the short ends under about half inch more. (It should end up with three folds.)

Keeping all of the outside folds closest to you, glue those half-inch sections onto either side of the open card so that it forms a little table when the card is opened.

Make sure you hold that strip in place long enough for the glue to take hold before you move on. Don't close the card while it is drying or you risk gluing your card shut by mistake.

Next you will choose your items to be on the popped up section of your card. You can choose an image or you can cut out a series of words. If your items are small you can even put several of them, just keep in mind that at least some portion of them must be touching the front of the little table strip that you have already glued on.

Glue your items to the front of your folded strip leaving the top portion of it uncovered. (Anything glued to the top portion is just going to get smashed when you close the card.) Let all of your items dry in place before you close the card so that it doesn't stick shut.

Once your popped up section is secure you can add any other decorations, drawings, or words to your card that you would like, before sending it off through the mail. Pop up cards make great birthday surprises as well as fun party invitations.
