What's happening in Jena 6 is absolutely ridiculous. And I know that I am not the first person to say this, nor am I an expert on this situation. However, the idea that something like this can happen is not new to me, as I have reported on similar issues in the past.

Take for example Genarlow Wilson. He was a 17-year old young man in his senior year at a Georgia high school and a great scholar athlete. During his senior year, he had a New Year's Eve gathering in a local hotel. He and his friends engaged in some sexual activities with a 15 year old female class mate of theirs, including oral sex. The next day, the girl reported that she had been raped, despite being quite complicit in the activity as video tape would prove, and as her denouncement of her accusation would soon come as well. However, because Mr. Wilson was 17 and she was 15, he was found guilty of having oral sex with a minor.

Yes, that's right. A 17-year-old was not allowed to have oral sex with 15 year old in the state of Georgia. And yes, that did result in Wilson being in jail for several years, and he is still there. Sounds stupid, right? Try this on for size. They repealed the law because of how stupid it sounds after they convicted Mr. Wilson, but they did not make the law apply retroactively, so the old law still applies to Wilson and still has him in jail to this day.

So when I hear about something like Jena 6 it's disturbing, but it is nothing new. In fact, it is no different from the average black man's view of America. From seeing black people unfairly represented in prisons, to seeing the economical opportunities afforded to certain races when they are not afforded to African-Americans, the average black person is not surprised by it. So when a group of six young black men receive different punishments from that of a group of white men for doing the same thing to each other, such as the case with Jena 6, part of me of is disappointed, and part of me is like "What is it this time?" And that's unfortunate.

Color of change? Why are the people of color being put in jail at alarming rates in this country?

Alyce: you misread this comment. I was talking about the white men that are spouse abusers. You mentioned that they got a lesser sentence. I say its irrelevant to what is right and just. They SHOULD have gotten more. Just because THEY didnt doesnt mean someone else shouldnt. compuwise: Alyce, just because they didnt get 22 to 100 years that doesnt mean they dont deserve it.

Also you said, "But, Deez, you are so hung up on skin color, you can not see human beings and you seem hell-bent on proving what you believe and convincing others your opinion is fact." To that I say, you are wrong. I am hung up on the truth. The truth that the families of these young black males are failing to prepare them for a life as a productive member of society. The fact that their fathers are abandoning them and setting them up for incarceration. THAT IS THE COLD HARD TRUTH. Until the black community comes to grips with the fact that, it is their own fault, nothing will ever change. Their problems aren't because I work and raise my boys to do great things and to be responsible citizens. Their problems are self created and self exacerbated by perception of others. WAKE UP!

You also said, "With Mexican-Mafia enforcing their law (mainly illegal immigrants) on the streets, many black youth are forced into joining rival gangs for their own survival." To that I would say, black on black crime outweighs any other fear factor that is involved. Just look at the stats. I can see black kids joining another black gang to protect themselves from one another over any perceived threat from the "Mexican Mafia." Sure in some areas the "Mexican Mafia" may be a factor but in the vast majority of cases it is black on black gangs that present the most danger to life and limb for these same kids.

Alyce you stated, "White" middle class people are having trouble finding money to send their children to college so, Deez, how do you expect poor people to send theirs?" I suggest they do like the disappearing middle class, secure loans, grants, and scholarships.

Alyce, you and I both know, once you strip away the hackishness from all your arguments... a gang of thugs beat a white kid into a loss of consciousness. The white kid wasn't affiliated in any way, shape or form with the nooses, nor was the attack, as it happenned THREE months after the fact. It's a hate crime, period, unrelated to the nooses.

...so, Deez, how do you expect poor people to send theirs? I would also suggest, Deez, that you read "Freedom Writers Diary" or rent the movie if it is on DVD for a look at life for minorities. With Mexican-Mafia enforcing their law (mainly illegal immirants) on the streets, many black youth are forced into joining rival gangs for their own survival. Cynthis Coopers who survive are the exception, not the rule.

There is a double standard of (in)justice in the USA. Jena 6 was a clear example of that. DA Walters threatened teenagers (make your lives disappear with the stroke of a pen) and it has already been proven that the charges he levied against the teens (so that he could try them as adults and lock them up and destroy their lives) were bogus. That is exactly why there may be more persons of color in jail. "White" middle class people are having trouble finding money to send their children to college...

But, Deez, you are so hung up on skin color, you can not see human beings and you seem hell-bent on proving what you believe and convincing others your opinion is fact. Example: my ex was driving with a suspended driver's license, with expired registration, (probably no car insurance), speeding, crossed a double center line on a highway (that is, a no-passing zone) and under the influence of alcohol. He got pulled over for a cop and did not receive a ticket. I am willing to bet if his skin color was some shade of black that story would have ended differently.

Oops, I was looking for another AC CP who wrote about Jena to find the article URL about a Blog Action Day regarding Darfur. I did not quite get "LiberalDrivels" comment directed to me. Deez: I would suggest you read Walter Moseley's "What Next: A Memoir Towards World Peace", because the answer is there. To put it in terms you might understand, because I do not recall the exact quote: my ex-husband (very White) thought he was like Robin, or Robin and the 7 Hoods; "steal from the rich, to give to the poor".

Ooops double standard* They would also be charged with a hate crime

Posted on 10/17/2007 at 11:10:00 PM

Alyce if 6 white people attack a black person for shouting white devil they would get life in prison for attempted murder this doulbe standar is getting to be a bit irksome

You stated: "It's why the number of black men in jail is disproportionate to the number of black people in America. It is why socioeconomic status of black people in this nation remains stagnant. And it is why there number of black men in jail trumps the number black men in college. Because somebody wants it to be like this." And I'd say your absolutely right, the black community must want it that way, why else would they continue to live the way they do, why else would they keep committing crimes, why else would they keep holding themselves down. Go figure.

This should open your eyes: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/396704/jena_6_a_study_of_racism_and_race_relations.html?page=5 Give it a read, find out what kinda piece of shit this kid really was. A lot of this seems to be overlooked by most in the black community.

I have a request...can all of you supporting the Jena 6 please direct me to locations where you provided equivalent support to any whites accused of committing a violent hate crime?
