Whether you are a first-time visitor or a long time patron of the award wining Spazio restaurant and jazz club located in the heart of Sherman Oaks on Ventura Blvd. you should keep in mind that when Luigi, the manager of the Establishment charges you with a ridiculous fee, he does anything to make it stick.

I have been a fan of Spazio for many years and have celebrated quite a few special occasions there as well as just enjoyed a quaint evening of jazz. From John Pisano's Tuesday's to an eclectic trio Friday's I liked it all and was always greeted with a smile and good service. This was the exact same case when five friends and I decided to drop by for desert on a Friday night; at least this was the case in the beginning.

It was around 11:30pm and the band was winding down; the restaurant was completely empty except for a few people at the bar and our table of six. Upon sitting down we have asked our waiter to bring us dessert menus thus skipping dinner. Chocolate Soufflé, Crème Brûlée, Profiterole,Sorbet, coffees, port, waters and more was brought to us swiftly and elegantly. The server was very polite, the dessert was great, the atmosphere was pleasant and it was time to get the check. Upon inspection of the $106 check, tip included, we have notice a $30 charge for entertainment - I, in all five or so years of being a regular visitor to the restaurant have never seen this charge, regardless of how many people I came with or what I have ordered. This being such a surprise to me I immediately and politely asked the waiter to waive the charge as I was sure that it was a mistake, to which he replied that his manger told him to put it on the bill. My reaction - tell the manager to take it off.

Takeaways
  • $30 Undisclosed Entertainment Charge
  • Unreasonable Manager
  • Great deserts and waiting staff.

In any negotiation, it is always important to keep your voice at its regular volume as it will make your opponent boil from the inside and make irrational decisions.
