It's almost that time of year again when we put away our sandals and flip flops and turn our attention to more substantial shoes for the cooler weather. If you're like many women, you can never have enough shoes. Unfortunately, shoes get expensive so you have to be a bit selective. By understanding the upcoming season's shoe trends, you can decide ahead of time what shoes you need to buy for the season without subjecting yourself to the pressure of a potential impulse purchase at the shopping mall. .Now's the time to plan for fall 2007 footwear. Here are some of the upcoming trends in shoes and footwear:

1. Shoe with a menswear focus

Shoes for women with a masculine theme are making their appearance this fall. Some of the shoes being displayed for women this year are hard to distinguish from men's dress shoes. Of particular significance is the return of the Oxford shoe which was once such a hit on campuses everywhere. This classic, leather, lace up shoe is making its comeback this year. Even if you don't like their look, at least you can say they look comfortable.

2. The skinny on ankle boots

Boot styles this fall will center around the ankle boot, frequently accented with trims such as fur and zippers. These are a natural for the popular skinny legged jeans and pants, but may look awkward with styles that shows the leg. These ankle boots defy the menswear shoe theme by having a more substantial heel. You'll look like a woman when you wear these.

3. The emergence of the metallic shoe

Shoes that shine are going to be a hit for fall. You'll see a return of the patent leather shoe in a variety of styles and colors with an emphasis on black. You can also expect to see combinations of black patent leather with gold trims. Gold and black as a duo seems to be a popular look for both day and evening. These shoes have a strong feminine touch and provide a stark contrast to the more masculine appearing Oxford shoe.

4. Tall boots with and without cuffs
