If you haven't heard of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, first read What is Talk Like a Pirate Day? Basically, it's a fun day set aside each September 19 to talk like a pirate.Talk like a Pirate Day is gaining in popularity each year. Schools, universities, and charities are all having fun with this pirate themed day. Many pubs and bars are celebrating Talk Like a Pirate Day. Check your local newspaper or the internet to see if there are any National Talk Like a Pirate Day activities in your area.
To get you started on National Talk Like a Pirate Day, learn some of these common pirate terms and phrases with this Pirate Glossary:
Arrr! This is a basic pirate phrase that you can use when learning to talk like a pirate. Arrr! basically means absolutely anything you want it to mean. So, whenever you get stuck trying to talk like a pirate, just utter a hearty "Aarrr".
Aye! means 'yes' in pirates lingo. Sailors use 'Aye' as well.
Nay means 'no' in pirate speak.
Ahoy! is "hello". "Ahoy, mate!" is "Hello, friend".
Avast means stop.
"Lubber" or "land lubber" is anyone, basically, that isn't a pirate. A lubber's life isn't at sea, but on land. It's an insult, at least on Talk Like a Pirate Day, anyway.
A mate or matey is a pirate's friend or fellow pirate.
A booty is a pirate's treasure, of course.
Grog is a pirate's brew.
A lass is the same as a wench to a pirate.
A scallywag is a rotten scoundrel.
Remember, learning how to talk like a pirate is more than just knowing pirate slang. To correctly talk like a pirate, you must have attitude. Speak with a throaty voice and have a scowl handy when the opportunity presents itself.
So, how do you celebrate National Talk Like a Pirate Day? There are lots of fun things you can do besides just talk like a pirate
Fun National Talk Like a Pirate Day ideas:
For adults, serve drinks with lots of rum. Grog was a popular drink among pirates of yonder days. Grog is simply water and rum. Often, lime juice was added to keep scurvy away. Here is a modern Grog pirate drink recipe: Pour an ounce of rum, one tablespoon of lime juice, and a teaspoon of sugar into a mug. Fill the rest of the mug with water. Stir and drink.
