2007 Emmy Preview: Outstanding Comedy Series
The fives nominees are, "Entourage", "The Office", "30 Rock", "Two and A Half Men", and "Ugly Betty."
Let's start with the show, I'll admit I know the least about, "Ugly Betty." This is under the comedy category, and it mostly is, but it sure feels more like another version of "Boston Legal" to me. What we call a dramedy (drama show with comedy throughout). First this show is twice as long as the other nominees during a normal show ("The Office" has a few hour episodes on its resume). And it's filmed like a drama. The premise is funny, a fish out of water tale about a not so good looking woman working at a fashion magazine. Of course in real life the girl that plays her (America Ferrera) is really good looking. For my money, this show is the new Desperate Housewives. Women love it. My wife loves it. I've watched a few episodes and it's just not for me. I'm not laughing. It's more absurd and out there, with zany plot twists and insane characters. It feels like another David E. Kelley drama with it's mix of comedy and "real" life. Of course, it did receive 11 nominations, 2nd only to The Sopranos. So TV respects it. I just don't think it's close to the other four shows and not convinced it's in the right category in the first place.
