Backbone State Park is nestled into the peaceful country grounds near Lamont, Iowa and is a perfect spot for families who are wanting to go RVing, camping or just want to spend a beautiful day outdoors. It has a rustic entrance of huge cut stone entrance rocks on either side that welcome you to the park. The scenic drive is a nice winding ride through the wooded hills that takes you through the park. If you look closely you might see a fawn with its mother sheltered in the woods. At the top of the hills you'll find a scenic overlook that gives you an amazing view of the valley below and the river with huge stone bluffs. Hikers can be seen coming up the paths and the paths aren't to steep as many children attend the trails with their parents.

Old stone bridges cross some of the deeper streams and are great for taking a rest near or snapping a few memorable pictures. In one stream near a small bridge families often let the children wade and play in the water. It is not uncommon to find adults splashing around in the creek beds either. Trout streams cross the roads in several areas and the water in places is above the roads so drive slowly or better yet roll up your pant legs and wade across. The water is very cold and refreshing on a hot day. If you look closely you may see a trout swimming. Near one of the road crossings for the trout streams you'll be able to see the three tiny whirlpools that take the water from one side of the stream to the other. Remember though to fish for trout you'll need a trout stamp!

Several bridges in red metal and wood are found in the park and they make great photo opportunities. Towering trees line areas of the streams and winding trails that lead to uncommon views , even a cold dark cave in the hill side. Wildflowers growing among rocks and crevices are everywhere. Don't be surprised to find woodland mushrooms growing on the sides of deeply forested trees near the sounds of rushing streams. Backbone State Park also has a boathouse where you can rent paddle boats that is designed to resemble a light house fashioned from stone with a matching water fountain. You can climb the stairs and go inside the turrant to view the lake from above.
