Before arriving in Nantucket for my honeymoon there were three things that were constant: 1) everyone had heard great things about vacations there; yet little had actually been there 2) the people who had been there were strangely tight lipped about the place 3) the people who had been there all raved about this place Black Eyed Susan's for breakfast.

That's it. So, with some trepidation from our FREE breakfast we'd had the morning earlier (a free breakfast which was, by all accounts, pretty good) we made our way out to the nearby Black Eyed Susan's to try our hand at the grub. And it was closed.

"Due to technical difficulties, Black Eyed Susan's will not be open for breakfast today," read a hand scribbled note on a white piece of printer paper in black sharpie that appeared hastily tagged to the front window.

"Huh," thought I, and my new bride and myself sulked away a little bit dejected; an empty feeling gnawing at our bellies; part from the dejection, part from the lack of sustenance. Today was a new day though and we bounded from our beds still very excited about the Black Eyed wonder that was Black Eyed Susan's.

We'd told Mary at the B&B about our travails from the day before, "Oh yeah," she'd said, as though this were a regular occurrence, "try the hash," was her only piece of advice and we exited and made our way across Broad Street and over to Federal and finally up to the tiny entrance we'd been to before, at 10 India Street.

Our approach was a little bit disconcerting. It was 9:45AM or so; a little late for a breakfast crowd for most other places on the planet but Nantucket was growing more and more foreign to me every second. There were several people all looking down India Street in the general direction of the restaurant the same way people gawk when they're shooting a film or television show in Manhattan. At least this level of over-the-shoulder gazing was worthy of a celebrity loitering or any one of the street dancer groups that frequent random city streets at random times during the day.
