This one simple pattern is so versatile you can make hundreds of unique gifts and fun items for the home in a snap.

From coasters to pillows, basket liners, pot holders and placemats your imagination is the limit.

Let's start with the basic pattern. The choice of yarn and size of hook is up to you unless the item is to be used or stuffed a smaller hook is recommended.

First the abbreviations

Ch=chain stitch

Sc=single crochet

SL =slip stitch

Hcd =half double crochet

Dc =double crochet

Simple circle:

Row1: ch3 and 6 sc in first chain. (6 stitches SL to first stitch do not turn

Row 2: 2 sc in each sc around SL to first stitch do not turn (*12 stitches)

Row 3: *2 sc in first sc and 1 sc in next sc *Repeat from * (18 stitches) SL to first stitch do not turn

Row 4: *2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc *Repeat from * (24 stitches) SL to first stitch do not turn.

Row 5: *2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc *Repeat from * (30 stitches) SL to first stitch do not turn.

Row 6: *2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 4 sc *Repeat from * (36 stitches) SL to first stitch do not turn.

Row 7-: As you can see you simply increase one sc in between the 2 sc stitches to make your circle larger. It will require some counting and note taking if you are making a circle that has 20 or 30 stitches between each 2 stitch increase. Each row increases 6 stitches.

Now for the fun part what to do with all these circles you have made.

One idea is to make 2 circles the same size as an old cd or one of those free demo cd's that come in the mail and placing the sides you like best of your circles to the outside sc halfway around the edges connecting the two circles. Insert the cd and complete connecting the circles with sc's SL to the first stitch and weave in ends. These make great coasters.

Placemats are just larger circles. You can add an edge of dc topped with a row of sc to make a lacier looking boarder or use a small hook and cotton yarn for the elegant look.
