The tiny Orange County in Southern Indiana has experienced more hard times than good since the 1949 raid of the casinos during the Prohibition Era. The county has had the state's highest unemployment rate for years. That has all changed now since over half of the French Lick Springs Resort employees who have been hired are from Orange County.

The resort closed for renovation in November 2005 and reopened a year later as part of the new French Lick Resort Casino. The hotels, the French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs Hotel are national historic landmarks. West Baden's six-story atrium is the world's second largest free-span dome. The completion of this massive renovation returns the town of French Lick to one of the Midwest's biggest resort destinations. Hopes are running high as locals enjoy new jobs and business opportunities, and as a result, a renewed sense of community.

My husband and I have had the pleasure of visiting the resort several times. There are no words to describe how grand this place is. You simply have to see it for yourself. It is well worth the trip just to be able to experience the beautiful atrium in the West Baden hotel. Room prices are reasonable, amenities abound, and the casino is exceptional.

Southern Indiana is full of towns with unusual names like Beanblossom, Santa Clause, Hindustan, and Gnaw Bone. Of all of the treasures that you can find in Southern Indiana, French Lick is the bell of the ball. Listed below are a few other interesting places to stay and play in Orange County. Bring the family and have some fun!

The Beechwood Inn is located at 8513 West State Road 56 in French Lick. It's a beautiful historic home built in 1915 which is furnished with period antiques. All rooms offer private baths. Breakfast is served daily to each guest. Phone (812) 936-9012 for more information.

The Crazyhorse Ranch is located at 6000 W County Road 250 N in West Baden. It features cozy rooms and cabins with amenities like horseback riding, canoing, fishing and hiking. All rooms have a private porch. Phone (812) 936-9199 for more information.

Good info, Kim. I honestly thought that French Lick was kind of a "Has been." I'm glad to learn otherwise. Maybe we'll go sometime!

Sounds like an interesting but laid back place.

We had a room on the 5th floor overlooking the Atrium at the West Baden Springs Hotel. What a delight, can't wait to go back.

jcorn....Bill Cook (Lauth Property Group of Indianapolis) is the owner and the renovation cost $382 million. I guess Larry Bird decided to back out. Donald Trump was also thinking about it at one time. It is an amazing place. You sould check it out somtime!

This is in my neck of the woods and I wondered how they'd manage to bring this back to its "former" glory or perhaps even better. Do you know who owns it? I do know that Larry Bird was a contender at one point (coach for Pacers, former basketball player). Did he end up owning it? It is so nice to hear that it is gorgeous again!
