Light
Gophers are very sensitive to light and will abandon their tunnel if they detect it. After placing pocket gopher traps, you will need to cover up the opening in the ground so that light can't get in. You can use a board, grass clogs, or any other material that will completely cover the hole.
Time
You can use pocket gopher traps anytime during the year because gophers don't hibernate. Although, it's best to use them during the spring. In the spring, the ground will be much softer and it will be easier for you to dig. Also, gophers are most active during the spring. Their increased mound-building will make them more vulnerable to pocket gopher traps.
Direction
Most people try to eliminate gophers by placing just one trap in the main tunnel. It's more effective to use multiple pocket gopher traps in the same tunnel, with each trap facing a different direction. This way, the traps will be able to capture them when they're coming from either direction instead of just one direction.
Stakes
You should always attach pocket gopher traps to a stake driven into the ground. Doing this will allow you to remove the dead animal and the trap itself much easier. Using a stake will also prevent other predators from removing the pocket gopher traps.
Invaders
You may be tempted to put the traps away after you've caught your prey. However, you should always leave the pocket gopher traps in place after you have caught the gopher. Invading gophers will usually explore the former gopher's tunnel systems before it constructs its own. If you leave the pocket gopher traps in place, you will be able to catch the invaders before they move in.
