The Britney/Lindsay Factor (or Why the Role of Parents Are Important when Working and Living in Hollywood)

It's No Coincidence that (in)famous Girls Gone Wild in Hollywood Haven't Had Good Relations with Their Parents...and Perhaps a Hollywood Family Therapy Summit Would Help in Getting Something Solved

Earlier this year, the press (that is the Perez Hilton type of press) was reporting about a new feud between Britney Spears' father, James Spears, and his daughter about who was giving her the proper direction in life. At the time, some people seemed to agree with Britney's father when he said Britney didn't take responsibility for herself in why she was having a meltdown while ultimately being forced (by her manager) into rehab (no, no...yes!). In turn, Britney spoke out saying that her upbringing and having troubled relationships with her father and mother all her life were to blame for why she was turning into a train wreck. Cut to all those comment sections on entertainment websites spewing their arguments for the pro and con sides. Also cut to Britney having a performing meltdown at the MTV Video Awards on September 9 of this year--even though you've already done that one too many times.

As insignificant as the father/daughter argument story might seem in the world picture--it really was an interesting debate between accountability and blaming someone else in the morally ambiguous fog of the entertainment business. What was lost on many, though, is that Britney was primarily right--or at least 90% right with some personal accountability necessary on her side. The reality was that she was revealing a major problem that's been permeating in Hollywood with young starlets more recently. Many of the hottest ones of the last five to ten years have bad relationships with their fathers or mothers. In some cases, their parents divorced when they were young with only a mother to grow up with and fall back on when dealing with the beginning (and future) perils of show business. In even worse cases--they tolerated living with their parents for a while...and then banned them from their life because they just couldn't get along. With those parental figures out of their lives and "yes" men and women in their management entourages surrounding them as a human force field--it became a dilemma of who really was supposed to be the parental figure.

You popped that nail on the head! One question: Is the paparazzi invited to the Hollywood family therapy summit? If so, does that denegrate it to a show? Perhaps there could be an OCD conference for paparazzi at the same time? Just wondering.
