The New Ghostwriters: How Online Bloggers May Be Influencing Thoughts, Jokes and Catchphrases in the Mainstream Media

If You See a Popular Comedy or News Show Mentioning a Phrase, Joke or Original Thought that Looks Familiar--Perhaps You Saw it First on Associated Content or Popular Blogs and Message Boards

Call a lot of us freelance internet writers Cyrano de Bergerac if you want (without an elongated proboscis in the middle of our face)--even though I'd never want to state that publicly. Well, I guess I just changed that, didn't I? But I'm not necessarily talking about myself. I'm referring to other "amateur" writers I've read who freelance on the net and bring stronger insights into the world around us than the professional writers who front the mainstream media. Certainly here at Associated Content--I've seen plenty of brilliant thoughts from the regular writers who could change the world if we were the mainstream media. Perhaps Associated Content will become mainstream media once the secret gets out how creative the writers are here, some of their backgrounds, and how revolutionary the concept of the site is. We seem to be beat temporarily by half-witted people who run the mainstream though. My theory has been for a while that those who run the show (i.e. mostly corporations) are generally several IQ points lower than those who deserve to be in those jobs. No, I'm not setting up any Presidency jokes...

The reason I compare online writers to good old Cyrano is because I've long had the feeling washed-out writers and media producers check out sites such as Associated Content and other blogging sites regularly to seek out ideas, news stories or anything else that needs to fill their apparent creative deficiencies. It's too bad those who helm what we read or watch seem to be burned out so fast on ideas. What that says about working in mainstream news or other creative enterprises gives one a bit of a chill if a natural creative flow of ideas isn't working like it should. That may be an overexaggerated thought--despite seeing some evidence lately of references, stories, phrases and other subtle little thoughts that seem to creep into mainstream news and other shows that I've read days, weeks or months before on various blogs.

I smiled when I read your title. This article reflects a lot of the thoughts I have regarding "amatuers" versus the mainstream. There is now a kink in the mind numbing media rhetoric. Aaahh...reality. Thank you AC. Thank you for this article.

Great article, and I feel for you because this has happened to me many times too, and even before the Internet days. It even got as bad as having a song virtually stolen from me that sold millions of copies and a purloined story that became a "movie of the week" and eventually a syndicated TV series. This cost me millions of dollars in "lost" royalties.
