The National Domestic Violence Hotline defines abuse as, "Abuse is a pattern of coercive control that one person exercises over another. Battering is a behavior that physically harms, arouses fear, prevents a partner from doing what they wish or forces them to behave in ways they do not want. Battering includes the use of physical and sexual violence, threats and intimidation, emotional abuse and economic deprivation."
Attorneys, legal advocates and social workers that are trained and have experience helping domestic violence and sex assault survivors staff the Texas Advocacy Project. In addition to preparing legal documents, they have also been involved in precedent-setting issues that affect all survivors for years to come.
This grant will enable the Texas Advocacy Project to expand their services across the state, and better serve the Spanish-speaking population. It will also help them pursue other precedent-setting issues that need to be addressed. Only 2% of all victims are housed in domestic violence shelters.
The Texas Advocacy Project began with three lawyers who volunteered their time to give legal advice to survivors. Today they help over 10,000 victims of domestic violence in Texas. They have both an Assault Legal Line and Family Law Hotline.
