Every kid's bedroom needs a waste basket or trash can. Why settle for a boring plastic cylinder when you can design a stylish lace up waste basket? Using basic materials found at any craft store, you can design a trash can to match any bedroom style your children would like.

Materials Needed for the Waste Basket or Trash Can

To make this great kid's waste basket, you need some thick foam board. Be sure it is at least five milimeters thick. You also need craft foam sheets in your choice of colors. To put the whole thing together, acrylic craft glue, four shoe-laces or ribbons, a hole punch, scissors, and a ruler are also needed.

Making the Sides of the Waste Basket or Trash Can

The sides and bottom of the lace up waste basket are made with the thick foam board. This is not styrofoam, but the solid type of foam that comes in sheets. Cut out four rectangles of equal height and width. Be sure to make straight edges using a ruler and pencil for marking. You can make the sides any size that you like, but do not try to make it too big. The waste basket will not be as effective that way.

After you have cut out the rectangles of thick foam board, it is time to decorate them. Using the craft foam sheets, cut out any designs you like using templates or free hand drawing. Stripes are easy by measuring and marking straight lines on an alternate color. Flowers are great for a girl's room.

Glue these designs to the outside of the thick foam board pieces. Do not glue them within an inch of the edges, as that space is reserved for the laces.

Building the Waste Basket or Trash Can

The next step in creating the lace up craft waste basket is punching the holes along the edges of each foam rectangle. Use a ruler to measure in about half an inch from the edge. Every one to one and a half inch, make a mark with your pencil. This will be where the holes will be punched.

After the marks are made, use the hole punch to make the holes. This will be tough, so use your muscles, or ask a grown-up for help. If the hole punch does not work on the foam, try using a craft knife or poke a hole with a nail.

Takeaways
  • Every kid's bedroom needs a waste basket or trash can.
