Review of Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce with Italian Sausage

My family loves Italian food, and one of the staples that we eat at least twice a month is spaghetti. When I was first married 27 years ago, I made all of my sauces from scratch. But the pressures of work and other committments left me looking for some tasty ready made sauces.

I admit, I usually purchase Ragu or Prego, but when my grocer had Hunt's 26 ounce canned spaghetti sauce with Italian Sausage on sale for 79 cents, I gave it a try. Many canned sauces say they are meat flavored, but not this one. The third ingredient is Italian Sausage!

Ingredients

Tomato puree, water, Italian Sausage, seasoning, maltrodextrin, salt, dextrose, dehydrated garlic, high fructose corn syrup, spices, soybean oil, dehydrated onions, sugar, carrot fiber, yeast extract, citric acid, natural flavor, corn oil, soy sauce. Contains soy and wheat.

Taste

This sauce is a thick sauce full of flavor. It is tasty right out of the can, and if I'm in a hurry that's how I use it. If I have an hour or two to spare, I will add my own touches of fresh tomatoes and spices and it almost tastes homemade. I find the generous addition of Italian Sausage gives this sauce a very authentic taste, and really adds to the full bodied taste.

Is It Healthy?

That is subjective these days, but there are definitely some red flags if you have high blood pressure or diabetes. While I am thrilled that this sauce has zero saturated fat and zero trans fat, it does contain 25% of the daily value of sodium, as well as having a fair amount of sugar. The sauce doesn't taste salty to me (I love salt), but if you ever go on a sodium free diet (I have in the past), you will probably find it very salty.
