The news of the assault on Juanita Bynum by her husband has sent shockwaves through the church. This 215lb man thought is was acceptable behavior to beat, kick, stomp, and choke his wife; a person that he claimed to love. The comments that I have been reading on various sites seem to be mixed, and more concerned with how much money Bynum has. But then, people love it when people they think are "too good for their own good" are brought down through some kind of scandal.
This issue is clear; Bishop Thomas Weeks III did knowing and purposely try to kill his wife because he did not get his way. When she filed the divorce papers he said he was going to contest them. He has since changed his mind, but the fact that he had the audacity to say it shows the kind of man that he is.
Bynum was famous before marrying Weeks in 2002. For all intensive purposes, he needs her far more than she needs him. He was given a platform because of who she was. One might suspect that his beating was reflective of the jealousy that was in his heart. Black men can't handle successful women, and this is all too visual.
The thing that distresses me in this case is that he went to church the Sunday following his getting out of jail and his parishioners gave him a standing ovation. Are they crazy? No, they are deceived. When you follow a man instead of God, then you will follow him straight to hell with no question.
The other thing that is distressing is that Weeks said, the devil made him do it. How utterly juvenile is that? Anger and hatred in his heart caused him to try to kill his wife. If he were honest, there would be an admission of jealousy. This is not what a marriage is made of. It is supposed to be supportive.
Then we move into accusations that Weeks was abusive to other women, and had run up over $100,000 in debt. Further, he rented a 2.5 million dollar home that he owed $56, 000 on. When the eviction notice was served, they found that Weeks and his belongings were gone.
