New Jersey Law Update: Live with Full Service Gas or Die

New Jersey (and Oregon) Stand Tall - for Now

I live in New Jersey; one of just two states in this great nation that does not allow self service at gas stations (Oregon is the other). What does that mean exactly (and I have to ask this; I've met plenty of southerners who don't understand the concept of full service)?

There is an actual law that prohibits New Jersey drivers from pumping their own gas. Gas stations in New Jersey (and Oregon; I've never been but my diligent team of researchers tell me they are the other- New Jersey's celestial sister of the northwest, if you will) have people who we call "gas station attendants". I don't want to come off as racist, but most of these people are Hindu or Muslim (only 30% of them are nice; I'm nothing if not a stereotypist [or stereotyper, I guess there isn't a word for one who stereotypes- I think there should be]). Sometimes, if you catch them on a good day, they will wash your windshield like a bum in New York (I never know if you're supposed to tip them for this).

All in all, it's one of the Garden State's greatest perks.

Or is it?

Some say this law is archaic; others claim it promotes laziness. It's true that I didn't pump gasoline until I was 19 years old; and even then I was forced to do it by my college friends in South Carolina. I found myself holding the nozzle of that pump and staring at that confusing machine; they might've well as asked to dissemble an atomic bomb.

Senator Gerry Cardinale wants this to stop; he doesn't want the privileged youths of New Jersey getting laughed at for not knowing how a gas pump works. And before I comment on that; I'd like to first offer some general thoughts on New Jersey Senator Gerry Cardinale.

I had never heard of this man until I watched a snippet of the Daily Show last night on Comedy Central (and I hardly ever watch the Daily Show). This fact is telling for two points. One, if I did (at least) watch the Daily Show I would (at least) have a clue about the most basic political facts; and, secondly, I am a fairly out of touch nincompoop.

New Jersey has some of the LOWEST gas prices in the nation, not the HIGHEST. I was in Atlantic City over the weekend of the 12th and was FLOORED that gas prices on the Garden State Parkway were running about 3.07. That compares with 3.35 and up in Maryland and Pennsylvania

Great article! I'm from NJ and some of my relatives wouldn't know how to pump their own gas if they went to another state!

You lose your savings when the attendant overfills your tank, just to round off the price. The extra gas spills out or goes into the overflow of the nozzle, but you pay for it.

I'm from PA and moved to NJ (for reasons I won't go into). I HATE not being able to pump my own gas. What a stupid law. Pumping gas is so easy and you can do it so fast yourself, yet I'm forced to wait and wait for some guy to notice me and drag himself over...then wait AGAIN once the tank is full for him to return and finish. And you NJ people have no idea that those attendants are overfilling your tank just to round off the cost to the next dollar. You sit blindly in your car with no idea what the guy is up to, then just pay him whatever he asks. I would so much rather jump out, slap the credit card in, fill it, grab the receipt and go. Spending 10 minutes in a gas station waiting just plain sucks.

Mandatory full-service is partly why NJ gas prices are so much cheaper -- the stations save so much on insurance (because "unskilled" gas-pumping drivers are far more dangerous than the highly trained employees) that it more than offsets the minimum-wage attendants. Because insurance costs are spread across all the stations, this offset only works if ALL the stations (or at least a sizeable majority) have full-service, which is why it doesn't work on a station-by-station basis in other states.

Umm..... your comment: "It's bad enough that New Jersey has some of the country's highest gas prices ..." is false. People actually drive THROUGH NEW JERSEY JUST to pump their gas there because it's CHEAPER!

I'm in Pennsylvania and looking for a job, but I purposely avoid job openings in New Jersey simply because of the mandatory full-service gas. I don't enjoy dealing with people when I don't have to, especially people who may not be in particularly good mood waiting on me on a 20-degree day for a few dollars an hour. I wouldn't feel comfortable in this situation. I don't mind if gas stations offer full-service, but I'd like the freedom to choose whether I pump my own gas or not. Choice is more important to me than laziness.
